Stuart locally sources all types of wood, which he then uses to make useful and decorative wooden folk art. Some of these are painted and some are left in their natural state to show the beauty of their natural grain.
Recently inspired by archive footage of the Morecambe Bay Swimming Challenge I endeavour to convey the powerful emotions that swimming in cold water can produce, both euphoria and mindful calm. Sculpting in stoneware I finish my pieces in oxides and underglaze.
I had a background in art, which I’d loved since childhood but I only took up painting “seriously” after I retired. I get a lot of my inspiration from my surroundings. I work with a variety of mediums and love experimenting.

Oh if I had my time again I would have been a potter! Having taken up pottery later on, I have enjoyed developing skills and ideas for making ceramics. I have my own studio in Storth where I throw and hand build my pots, some functional and some just for arts sake. I cannot say I have “a style” and I want my makes to be viewed as individual and quite obviously not made in a factory so you will certainly find an eclectic mix of pieces available.

Making art is an itch that has to be scratched. I make art everyday, sometimes painting, usually print making, always drawing. My inspiration comes from everywhere, mostly landscapes, usually from the where I live. Recently, scale has become part of the process, and current works are small. What interests me as much as the image I make, when I print, is the process used to make it, using lino cut techniques and tools, some conventional, some not. However, as always, when the paper is about to be lifted, there is the anticipation and then the moment of surprise when the image is revealed.
