Yvonne Smalley: From paper to paint and sawdust to straw, I like to utilise tactile materials to interpret natural textures and images when creating cards and collages and acrylics for my small canvases, which are ready to hang.
Wendy’s ceramics are delightful to touch and hold, each unique ceramic piece re-images the waters edge, where land, sea and sunlight interact. With hand painted local birds flying in each day, come along and enjoy them, with new work too.
Exploring the uses of metal clay, recycling old silver plate, and shrink plastic amongst other things have instigated ideas for the Pocket Keepsakes, Baubles, and Windchimes/suncatchers.
I have been making Harris Tweed bags for eight years now, and have very much enjoyed selling at the SAAAF. However, I am now winding down, and have set myself two goals – to make simpler shapes, and to use up my many off-cuts of wool and tweed! So this year you will see bags in which I have combined smaller pieces of fabric, patchwork style. It has been an enjoyable challenge to find enough co-ordinating pieces to create a pleasing design, but Harris Tweed is very forgiving and it is surprising which colours work well together in the finished product. I hope you agree. So my intention is that this will be my final year at the Festival. However, I still have an intimidating amount of fabric to use up, so you might just (maybe) see me again next year!
I love experimenting with my art work and use a lot of mixed media. I paint with acrylics, oils, watercolour, pastel and ink. Sometimes all in one painting! My inspiration comes from my surroundings in all it’s moods.
